“And these signs shall follow them that believe…” Mark 16:17

When the Savior said, “Go, … teach all nations,” He said also, “These signs shall follow them that believe; In My name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” The promise is as far-reaching as the commission. Not that all the gifts are imparted to each believer. The Spirit divides “to every man severally as He will.” 1 Corinthians 12:11. But the gifts of the Spirit are promised to every believer according to his need for the Lord’s work. The promise is just as strong and trustworthy now as in the days of the apostles. “These signs shall follow them that believe.” This is the privilege of God’s children, and faith should lay hold on all that it is possible to have as an endorsement of faith. God has promised to co-operate with those who choose to labor in harmony with his purpose. We are to do our utmost to act our part faithfully, in order that he may demonstrate to the world what he can do through us. By baptism, we declared that, being dead to the world, we would henceforth remember that our life is “hid with Christ in God,” and that we have taken our position on the exalted platform of truth, there to work in unison with the hand that never fails.

“We are laborers together with God.” It is God that gives success to human endeavor. Without his presence with us, our efforts would amount to nothing. We are simply channels through which his blessings flow to our fellow beings. From everyone in whose heart Christ is an abiding presence, will go forth a power that will influence others to accept the Savior as their Redeemer.

If you strip yourselves of every hindrance to progress in the Christian life, your minds will be worked by the Holy Spirit, and you will become indeed “fishers of men.” The salvation of God will go forth from you as a lamp that burneth. If your own hearts are filled with light from above, you have the privilege, wherever you may be, of shedding light upon those who are in darkness. Continuing steadfast in God’s service unto the end, you will be granted an abundant entrance through the pearly gates into the heavenly city, where you will be greeted with the words, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant: … enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.” (2)

Charge for the Day: Today, seek God’s presence. Reflect upon the things that may be hindering a full reception of the Holy Spirit, and ask Him to fill you so you can reflect His light and His love to all you come in contact with.
